Knowing the tractor you want, and the market for it is a start, but it can all go out the window after a little hands-on time with the actual machine. It may have lived a hard life, and be worth half as much, or it may be a barn queen in mint condition and justifiably cost a pile more. For the rookie tractor buyer or the mechanically disinclined, this is where knowledgeable friends come into play.

Excavators (hydraulic) are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper (or stick), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house".[1] The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels. All movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors.[2] Due to the linear actuation of hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to accomplish the movements.[3]
Excavators are a valuable tool in a wide range of applications, from digging trenches and preparing foundations on construction sites, to driving in piles on a farm. Clear snow in poor weather, dredge rivers, or demolish existing structures as part of a clearing operation. Access to a John Deere or Komatsu digger makes many projects easier, helping you to keep to deadlines and improve overall workforce efficiency. While most excavators have tracks, it is also possible to get wheeled models, which may be more suitable in certain working environments, especially if you need to drive between work sites on main roads or require extra maneuverability.
On their own, compact tractors are powerful engines with wheels that can go pretty much wherever you want them to go. When they are combined with extra equipment, however, their power increases greatly. Most compact tractors have loaders on the front, which feature two parallel arms with connectors on the ends. Some of the following accessories attach to these loaders, and others attach to the back or the bottom of the tractor.
For sale is a 2005 Caterpillar 304CR Excavator, Cab/Heat/Air, Aux Hydraulics, Mechanical thumb,2 Speed,  Backfill Blade, VERY GOOD tracks, Cat Coupler, 10,844# Operating weight, 43 HP Diesel engine, 4,221 Hours.  Cranks right up and runs good, Tracks straight, turns strong both directions.  Has some dents/dings/scratches but seems to be mechanically pretty sound.  Cylinders all seem dry.
Skid Steer loaders offer great versatility. Due to their compact size and zero-radius turning circle, it is possible to use them in confined spaces where many other types of heavy machinery cannot reach. They are ideal for landscaping in parks and yards, or moving earth around a construction site; and in some cases it is possible to use them in place of a full-scale excavator to dig holes. Sellers on eBay also offer specialized buckets and attachments for clearing snow, grinding tree stumps, mowing grass, or digging trenches. With so many practical applications, skid steer loaders represent an excellent investment for small businesses looking to streamline some of their methods and improve overall workforce efficiency, and they are also useful for homeowners or farmers with a lot of land to maintain.
The first three-wheeled, front-end loader was invented by brothers Cyril and Louis Keller in Rothsay, Minnesota, in 1957.[2] The Kellers built the loader to help a farmer, Eddie Velo, mechanize the process of cleaning turkey manure from his barn. The light and compact machine, with its rear caster wheel, was able to turn around within its own length, while performing the same tasks as a conventional front-end loader.[2]
Sellers on eBay have new and used construction equipment from top brands, including Bobcat and Kubota, often at deep discounts. Purchasing refurbished or older models is a cost-effective way to shop, and also grants access to particular models and spare parts that may be difficult to find elsewhere. By taking advantage of these great prices, you have the opportunity to acquire machinery that might otherwise be outside of the budget of a sole trader or small business, helping you to get your fledgling business up and running without racking up large amounts of debt. Best of all, branded products offer the quality you expect from industry leaders, so second-hand machines are often still in excellent working condition with years of operational life.
