A skid-steer loader can sometimes be used in place of a large excavator by digging a hole from the inside. The skid loader first digs a ramp leading to the edge of the desired excavation. It then uses the ramp to carry material out of the hole. The skid loader reshapes the ramp making it steeper and longer as the excavation deepens. This method is particularly useful for digging under a structure where overhead clearance does not allow for the boom of a large excavator, such as digging a basement under an existing house. Several companies make backhoe attachments for skid-steers. These are more effective for digging in a small area than the method above and can work in the same environments. Other applications may consist of transporting raw material around a job site, or assisting in the rough grading process.

If you’re shopping for a tractor at auction, and do your research, and know enough for a thorough in-person inspection, that could be your story, too. Knowledgeable friends are worth their weight in gold, too. Me, I have a whole new list of things for the next big ag sale: a tiller, a brush hog, a spreader, grader blade, forks and on and on and on.
Some of the biggest names in the world produce skid steer loaders, including Bobcat, New Holland and Kubota. Consider a Boxer mini skid for domestic and small-scale applications, or invest in a powerful John Deere or Caterpillar loader for commercial use.  Even if you choose to buy a second-hand machine, you have the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have bought something built to last.
A zero-turn lawn mower is a riding mower that has a zero-turn radius--meaning it spins as opposed to turning like a standard vehicle with front-wheel turning. Basically, these things can turn on a dime. Instead of a steering wheel, most models have levers to control speed to each drive wheel, using a hydraulic-based system. They are considered faster and more efficient than standard riding lawn mowers. Because of this unique feature, they can be more expensive.

There’s also a cost in getting a tractor home. If you own a big trailer, this isn’t a concern, but if you don’t – and live far away from the auction yard – that bill can run a few hundred dollars. Kyle volunteered to haul whatever I bought the hour south to my place. So, with the repairs plus transport, I wagered the Kubota would cost $1,000 above what I bought it for. Excavators (hydraulic) are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper (or stick), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house".[1] The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels. All movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors.[2] Due to the linear actuation of hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to accomplish the movements.[3]
Hydraulic excavators usually couple engine power to (commonly) three hydraulic pumps rather than to mechanical drivetrains. The two main pumps supply oil at high pressure (up to 5000 psi) for the arms, swing motor, track motors and accessories while the third is a lower pressure (~700 psi) pump for pilot control of the spool valves; this third circuit allows for reduced physical effort when operating the controls. Generally, the 3 pumps used in excavators consist of 2 variable displacement piston pumps and a gear pump. The arrangement of the pumps in the excavator unit changes with different manufacturers using different formats.

The first three-wheeled, front-end loader was invented by brothers Cyril and Louis Keller in Rothsay, Minnesota, in 1957.[2] The Kellers built the loader to help a farmer, Eddie Velo, mechanize the process of cleaning turkey manure from his barn.
