Modern hydraulic excavators come in a wide variety of sizes. The smaller ones are called mini or compact excavators.[7] For example, Caterpillar's smallest mini-excavator weighs 2,060 pounds (930 kg) and has 13 hp; their largest model is the largest excavator available (a record previously held by the Orenstein & Koppel RH400), the CAT 6090, which weighs in excess of 2,160,510 pounds (979,990 kg), has 4500 hp, and a bucket as large as 52.0 m³.
Who likes dropping or spilling materials? No one. That’s why CASE’s innovative Ride Control™ feature is such a benefit. Just push a button to automatically steady the loader arm when traveling at elevated speeds and the machine automatically compensates with greater shock absorption and reduced loader arm bounce, so you can work faster than ever without spilling your load.

One solution does not fit all. CASE carefully considered each machine’s application, life expectancy, maintenance needs and operators. That’s why every CASE skid steer loader features a proven Tier 4 Final solution that is tailored for that model. CASE Tier 4-certified equipment is easier to maintain and, unlike competitive models, won't require you to master additional maintenance procedures. In fact, most CASE machines have maintenance-free emission solutions, so you can stay focused on your work—and not maintaining your machine.
Hydraulic excavator capabilities have expanded far beyond excavation tasks with buckets. With the advent of hydraulic-powered attachments such as a breaker, a grapple or an auger, the excavator is frequently used in many applications other than excavation. Many excavators feature a quick coupler for simplified attachment mounting, increasing the machine's utilization on the jobsite. Excavators are usually employed together with loaders and bulldozers. Most wheeled, compact and some medium-sized (11 to 18-tonne) excavators have a backfill (or dozer) blade. This is a horizontal bulldozer-like blade attached to the undercarriage and is used for levelling and pushing removed material back into a hole.

Compact tractors are just like other tractors in that they can be used with a variety of different attachments that have various purposes in agricultural and construction situations. Unlike other tractors, however, compact tractors weigh under 4,000 pounds, and they use less than 40 HP, with many using only 20 HP to 30 HP. These specialized tractors run at less than 540 RPM, and they are easier to store and maneuver than traditional tractors.

If you’re shopping for a tractor at auction, and do your research, and know enough for a thorough in-person inspection, that could be your story, too. Knowledgeable friends are worth their weight in gold, too. Me, I have a whole new list of things for the next big ag sale: a tiller, a brush hog, a spreader, grader blade, forks and on and on and on.

I called my pal, Kyle, who runs Van Galder Family Farms in Alpine, New York, and my friend and mechanic Bill Phelps, of Phelps Auto in Lansing, New York. I told them what I was up to and they gave me a punch list of things to look at. Kyle, I found out, would be at the auction and could kick tires with me. That night before the auction, I typed out the accompanying checklist of things to look at before the bidding started.
