I called my pal, Kyle, who runs Van Galder Family Farms in Alpine, New York, and my friend and mechanic Bill Phelps, of Phelps Auto in Lansing, New York. I told them what I was up to and they gave me a punch list of things to look at. Kyle, I found out, would be at the auction and could kick tires with me. That night before the auction, I typed out the accompanying checklist of things to look at before the bidding started.

A smart combination of a compact excavator with a compact loader, the MCR range is now available in the 6, 8 and 10-tonne class. Quite simply unique, the 6MCR is a tracked excavator that can travel at speeds of up to 10 km/h, a compact loader with 360° rotation, a construction machine that can switch from excavator mode to skid loader mode in seconds.
Thanks to a simple selector-switch, Mecalac patent, the driver can turn his compact excavator into a compact loader and then back again, using the same commands. Loading efficiency is maximized, it is made by the skid bucket supported on the blade which increases the machine’s efficiency thanks to the force of the thrust transmitted directly from the chassis to the bucket. The operation is performed more accurately using the control lever. The patented Mecalac cylinder coupling function, allows to synchronize the boom cylinders for perfect movement coordination and precision. It makes driving and handling easy, regardless of whether the operator is a novice or more experienced. And, whether engaged or otherwise, they’re yet another powerful feature along for the ride.

Excavators are a valuable tool in a wide range of applications, from digging trenches and preparing foundations on construction sites, to driving in piles on a farm. Clear snow in poor weather, dredge rivers, or demolish existing structures as part of a clearing operation. Access to a John Deere or Komatsu digger makes many projects easier, helping you to keep to deadlines and improve overall workforce efficiency. While most excavators have tracks, it is also possible to get wheeled models, which may be more suitable in certain working environments, especially if you need to drive between work sites on main roads or require extra maneuverability.
The Melroe brothers, of Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, North Dakota, purchased the rights to the Keller loader in 1958 and hired the Kellers to continue refining their invention. As a result of this partnership, the M-200 Melroe self-propelled loader was introduced at the end of 1958. It featured two independent front-drive wheels and a rear caster wheel, a 12.9 hp (9.6 kW) engine and a 750-pound (340 kg) lift capacity. Two years later they replaced the caster wheel with a rear axle and introduced the M-400, the first four-wheel, true skid-steer loader.[2] The M-440 was powered by a 15.5 hp (11.6 kW) engine and had an 1,100-pound (500 kg) rated operating capacity. Skid-steer development continued into the mid-1960s with the M600 loader.
One solution does not fit all. CASE carefully considered each machine’s application, life expectancy, maintenance needs and operators. On the end of the stick is usually a bucket. A wide, large capacity (mud) bucket with a straight cutting edge is used for cleanup and levelling or where the material to be dug is soft, and teeth are not required. A general purpose (GP) bucket is generally smaller, stronger, and has hardened side cutters and teeth used to break through hard ground and rocks. Buckets have numerous shapes and sizes for various applications. There are also many other attachments which are available to be attached to the excavator for boring, ripping, crushing, cutting, lifting, etc. Excavators in Scandinavia often feature a tiltrotator which allows attachments rotate 360 degrees and tilt +/- 45 degrees, in order to increase the flexibility and precision of the excavator.
