The conventional bucket of many skid loaders can be replaced with a variety of specialized buckets or attachments, many powered by the loader's hydraulic system. These include backhoe, hydraulic breaker, pallet forks, angle broom, sweeper, auger, mower, snow blower, stump grinder, tree spade, trencher, dumping hopper, pavement miller, ripper, tillers, grapple, tilt, roller, snow blade, wheel saw, cement mixer, and wood chipper machine.
Unlike in a conventional front loader, the lift arms in these machines are alongside the driver with the pivot points behind the driver's shoulders. Because of the operator's proximity to moving booms, early skid loaders were not as safe as conventional front loaders, particularly during entry and exit of the operator. Modern skid loaders have fully enclosed cabs and other features to protect the operator. Like other front loaders, it can push material from one location to another, carry material in its bucket or load material into a truck or trailer.
The wheels on a skid steer typically have no steering mechanism, they are in a fixed, straight line relative to the body of the machine. By turning the left and right wheel pairs at different speeds, the machine turns by skidding, or dragging its wheels across the ground. The rigid frame and strong wheel bearings prevent the torsional forces caused by this dragging motion from damaging the machine. This skidding motion tears up the ground on which the machine operates.

Skid steer loaders, the "Swiss Army Knives" of machines, use a wide range of mechanical and hydraulically powered attachments to accomplish varied tasks. Skid loaders, having sophisticated auxiliary hydraulic systems, are compact, highly maneuverable, and range in rated operating capacity (the weight that can be safely lifted and transported) from 500 to more than 4,000 pounds.
"Find out as much as you can about the job the skid steer is being put to," says Zupancic. "Get an idea of the dimensions of the site - especially the minimum dimensions. The worst thing for a contractor is to feel his rental provider hasn't given his business enough thought and has recommended a machine that won't fit within the most vital dimensions of the jobsite."
This machine size's ROC allows it to lift the heaviest loads, such as moving pallets of brick or dumping loads of dirt into the back of trucks. "These machines also have the horsepower and hydraulic flow to tackle tough jobs and attachments," says Rostberg. "Attachments that perform best with a high-flow machine, such as a wheel saw or planer for road construction or a forestry cutter for site preparation, work best with these machines."
Skid Steer loaders offer great versatility. Due to their compact size and zero-radius turning circle, it is possible to use them in confined spaces where many other types of heavy machinery cannot reach. They are ideal for landscaping in parks and yards, or moving earth around a construction site; and in some cases it is possible to use them in place of a full-scale excavator to dig holes. Sellers on eBay also offer specialized buckets and attachments for clearing snow, grinding tree stumps, mowing grass, or digging trenches. With so many practical applications, skid steer loaders represent an excellent investment for small businesses looking to streamline some of their methods and improve overall workforce efficiency, and they are also useful for homeowners or farmers with a lot of land to maintain.
No over-digging. No undercutting. No wasted time, fuel or dollars. SiteControl helps eliminate rework by making reliable, repeatable precision a reality. CASE offers tailor-made hardware and software solutions for all positioning and measuring tasks in construction, including ways for businesses to improve productivity and lower costs – both on and off your machine.
ASV skid-steer loaders offer state-of-the-art technology for exceptional performance, durability, and operator comfort. Unlike most other skid steer brands, the ASV models give you exceptional ground clearance and a larger departure angle at the rear bumper, so you can climb easier and work more productively in a wider range of ground conditions - a hallmark of the ASV brand.
The original skid-steer loader arms were designed using a hinge at the rear of the machine to pivot the loader arm up into the air in an arc that swings up over the top of the operator. This design tends to limit the usable height to how long the loader arm is and the height of that pivot point. In the raised position the front of the loader arm moves towards the rear of the machine, requiring the operator to move extremely close to or press up against the side of a tall container or other transport vehicle to get the bucket close enough to dump accurately. At the highest arm positions the bucket may overflow the rear of the bucket and spill directly onto the top of the machine's cab.
The Melroe brothers, of Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, North Dakota, purchased the rights to the Keller loader in 1958 and hired the Kellers to continue refining their invention. As a result of this partnership, the M-200 Melroe self-propelled loader was introduced at the end of 1958. It featured two independent front-drive wheels and a rear caster wheel, a 12.9 hp (9.6 kW) engine and a 750-pound (340 kg) lift capacity. Two years later they replaced the caster wheel with a rear axle and introduced the M-400, the first four-wheel, true skid-steer loader. The M-440 was powered by a 15.5 hp (11.6 kW) engine and had an 1,100-pound (500 kg) rated operating capacity. Skid-steer development continued into the mid-1960s with the M600 loader.
Operate the skid steer loader the way you like through the simple touch of a button on our EZ-EH controls. Quickly switch between personalized settings for speed and control customization; program up to nine different presets to recall operator settings for different jobs and different operators at the touch of a button. There’s also an intuitive lockout menu and rocker switch to easily alternate between CASE “H” and “ISO” patterns.
