A skid-steer loader can sometimes be used in place of a large excavator by digging a hole from the inside. The skid loader first digs a ramp leading to the edge of the desired excavation. It then uses the ramp to carry material out of the hole. The skid loader reshapes the ramp making it steeper and longer as the excavation deepens. This method is particularly useful for digging under a structure where overhead clearance does not allow for the boom of a large excavator, such as digging a basement under an existing house. Several companies make backhoe attachments for skid-steers. These are more effective for digging in a small area than the method above and can work in the same environments. Other applications may consist of transporting raw material around a job site, or assisting in the rough grading process.
I was happy with my $9,000 purchase price, if not a little stunned. Except for our house, which was only possible thanks to a big mortgage, this was the largest single purchase I’d ever made. More than my truck. More than my wife’s car. But auction houses charge additional fees that you need to be mindful of. At the auction I attended, the buyer’s fee was 10 percent for total sales under $1,000 and 1 percent for sales above $1,000. Credit card payments were an additional 2 percent, which I was OK with because I got the equivalent of 3 percent cash back in points and had the dinero to pay it right off – thanks to months of tight living.
For those seeking a micro-excavator for urban or residential work, the Bobcat 325G track excavator offers the ability to perform excavation work in tight areas. Powered by a 27.7 horsepower Kubota diesel motor, the 325G is biased toward smaller excavation work like irrigation trenching, digging out smaller pools, and excavating pads for small structures.
Excavators typically feature a boom and arm, equipped with a bucket attachment that is used for digging. Unlike its cousin, the Mini Excavator, these units typically feature an enclosed cab for the operator; and have the ability to dig at greater depths and distances from the machine. While these units are typically tracked, IronPlanet sells Wheel Excavators as well. Browse popular models from top manufacturers including Cat Excavators, Hitachi Excavators, John Deere Excavators, Komatsu Excavators, Volvo Excavators and others. Be sure to check out our Excavator Attachments for your chance at a new bucket or thumb.
Skid-steer loaders are typically four-wheel vehicles with the wheels mechanically locked in synchronization on each side, and where the left-side drive wheels can be driven independently of the right-side drive wheels. The wheels typically have no separate steering mechanism and hold a fixed straight alignment on the body of the machine. Turning is accomplished by differential steering, in which the left and right wheel pairs are operated at different speeds, and the machine turns by skidding or dragging its fixed-orientation wheels across the ground. The extremely rigid frame and strong wheel bearings prevent the torsional forces caused by this dragging motion from damaging the machine. As with tracked vehicles, the high ground friction produced by skid steers can rip up soft or fragile road surfaces. They can be converted to low ground friction by using specially designed wheels such as the Mecanum wheel. Skid-steer loaders are capable of zero-radius, "pirouette" turning, which makes them extremely maneuverable and valuable for applications that require a compact, agile loader. Skid-steer loaders are sometimes equipped with tracks instead of the wheels, and such a vehicle is known as a multi-terrain loader.

Modern hydraulic excavators come in a wide variety of sizes. The smaller ones are called mini or compact excavators. For example, Caterpillar's smallest mini-excavator weighs 2,060 pounds (930 kg) and has 13 hp; their largest model is the largest excavator available (a record previously held by the Orenstein & Koppel RH400), the CAT 6090, which weighs in excess of 2,160,510 pounds (979,990 kg), has 4500 hp, and a bucket as large as 52.0 m³.
Engineered to be the most productive skid steer in the industry, ASV helps you get more work done. Starting from the ground-up with a unique frame, these machines offer the highest ground clearance, widest departure angle, fast ground speeds, direct drive pumps, and excellent cooling packages to work more efficiently in a wider range of conditions.
There are two main types of "Control" configuration generally use in excavators to control the boom and bucket, both of which spread the four main digging controls between two x-y joysticks. This allows a skilled operator to control all four functions simultaneously. The most popular configuration in the US is the SAE controls configuration while in other parts of the world, the ISO control configuration is more common. Some manufacturers such as Takeuchi have switches that allow the operator to select which control configuration to use.
Excavators (hydraulic) are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper (or stick), bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house". The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels. All movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors. Due to the linear actuation of hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to accomplish the movements.

Footage of the most recent theft on Sunday shows at least three men involved in that raid. One drives an excavator (stolen from a nearby construction site) toward an ATM built into the exterior wall of a shop outside of Dungiven. Over and over again he tears at the wall until most of that part of the building is destroyed. He then scoops up the ATM, swivels the arm over to a nearby van that just happens to have a hole cut out of its roof, and with the help of his two accomplices, sporting balaclavas, dumps the booty inside.

I called my pal, Kyle, who runs Van Galder Family Farms in Alpine, New York, and my friend and mechanic Bill Phelps, of Phelps Auto in Lansing, New York. I told them what I was up to and they gave me a punch list of things to look at. Kyle, I found out, would be at the auction and could kick tires with me. That night before the auction, I typed out the accompanying checklist of things to look at before the bidding started.
